More Girls Try Football

2:37 PM, Thursday, 07 May 09. Women and Girls

The Westmorland County FA have been working with local Charter Standard Clubs and schools to increase the number of teams playing in the South Lakes Girls League for next season.

It was the turn of Kendal United to get involved in a recent School-Club link programme promoting the club to prospective new girls in Years 5 and 6. The County FA have been working with the Charter Standard Club as well as schools in the Kirkbie Kendal cluster and further afield to encourage girls to take up the game and become the first girl’s team at the club.

Girls from the local primary schools came along to Kirkbie Kendal School on Tuesday for the first after school session run by teachers and coaches from the club supported by young volunteers. The girls were not put off by the awful weather; however the session was moved indoors to Kendal Leisure Centre for this week only to ensure the programme got kicked off.

The club are still looking for more girls to join the squad for the new season. Girls of any ability are welcome to attend the sessions which run for another 4 weeks.
