FA Skills Coaches Kick Off Girls Football Week

12:21 PM, Wednesday, 24 June 09. Women and Girls

The FA Skills Coaches put more than 120 girls through their paces on Monday night at the beginning of the FA Tesco Girls’ Football Week. The coaches travelled from Durham FA as part of the FA development programme and spent the evening coaching Cumbrian girls from the age of 8 through to 16.

The coaching sessions were organised as part of the Cumbria Girls Centre of Excellence trial process and were offered to any girls who wanted to attend; invites were sent to all schools and junior football clubs in the county.

The girls were split into small groups and the five skills coaches delivered the latest FA coaching techniques to the girls. New skills were learnt and plenty of small sided conditioned games followed.

Ian Bateman, Centre Director commented on the evening: “Tonight was a great opportunity for the girls to get coaching from the FA Skills Team. The Skills coaches follow a similar ethos to the Girls Centre of Excellence in terms of supporting the development of technically better players and the evening was also a great opportunity for the coaches at the Centre to get new ideas to take into next season.”

Next week will be the last session of the trial process, when around 64 girls will be selected to train and play for the Girls Centre of Excellence against teams from the North of England. A full fixture programme next season will enable the County to build on the solid foundations of the previous two seasons as we look to support and develop talented girl footballers in their dream to one day play for England.

The Girls’ Football Week is a national initiative to get girls playing football – local Charter Standard clubs are running open training sessions throughout the week to encourage more girls into the game.  For more information click here

With more teams playing football in Cumbria, there are more opportunities for girls and women to play regular football than ever before and FA Charter Standard Clubs have an open door policy to recruit new players.
