Brownies Kick It

10:38 AM, Wednesday, 01 July 09. Women and Girls

On Sunday 28 June 2009 26 Brownies were welcomed to Kendal United’s brand new facility at Castle Drive, Kendal. The glorious sunshine and fun morning of football brought the FA Tesco Girls Football week in the County to a fitting end.

Sunday’s taster session for the girls aged between 7 and 11, followed a considerable amount of behind the scenes work by both the Brownie groups in Kendal and the Westmorland County FA. Brownies in Kendal were provided with football taster sessions provided by the County FA. The taster sessions were aimed at encouraging the girls to play football and open up the player pathway for them to enter club football. Following the taster sessions, all girls were invited to attend the fun morning.

Clubs from the South Lakes Girls League got involved and provided coaching along with some current female players and young leaders at the new facility. The girls were put into groups and played some fun games before working on their skills. Some small sided games completed the morning with plenty of fun had by all.

Helen Aitchison, Girls and Women’s Football Development Officer says “The Brownie event highlighted the number of girls interested in playing football in the area. By giving the girls an opportunity to train with and meet the local coaches the pathway into the clubs will become easier for the girls.”

All girls who attended received a certificate of attendance as well as information on the local clubs in the area.

The Westmorland County FA would like to thank Kendal United for the use of the new facility, as well as the clubs who got involved. The South Lakes Girls League provides regular playing opportunities for girls from U12 to U16, and have an open recruitment policy.
