Westmorland County FA U18s started off their season with a 2-0 defeat against Shropshire FA in the FA County Youth Cup this weekend. The new look Westmorland side competed well throughout and pushed their visitors in a tight encounter at Kendal Town.

In the first half chances were limited for both sides with Shropshire enjoying more of the ball but unable to create any clear cut chances. Westmorland were strong at the back and were looking increasingly dangerous on the counter attack. As the game progressed Westmorland started to enjoy more of the ball however neither team were able to find any real openings.

Both teams knew the first goal would be crucial in the second half and Westmorland came close to taking the lead midway through the half when J. Hodgson struck a free kick from 25 yards only to be denied by a fine save from the opposition keeper. Shropshire struck the decisive blow when the centre forward managed to squeeze the ball home from close range with 15 minutes to go. As Westmorland pushed on for the equalisier Shropshire finished the game off with a smart looping header in added time.

This was the squads first game together and they will be buoyed by the positive display. Next up for Westmorland is another home game v Liverpool FA on Tuesday 12 November.
